Welcome to this 4K 144Hz Gaming monitor buying guide. With the release of the new PlayStation 5 ($449.99) and XBox Series X ($449.00) consoles, as well as Nvidia RTX 3080 Graphics cards, we are rapidly heading towards 4K 144Hz gaming.
To get the best experience however, you need a monitor that can output these glorious visuals at a fast enough refresh rate.
There are many 4K 144Hz options available for PC gamers due to all monitors supporting DisplayPort 1.4, but most are still limited to HDMI 2.0 which has a capped output of 4K 60p.
Again, this isn’t an issue if you are on PC, but of you are a new console owner, then you need to have an HDMI 2.1 monitor that connects to your console’s HDMI 2.1 port in order to get 4K 120Hz (144Hz overclocked).
If you a re looking to build a new Gaming PC, then check our my $500 Gaming PC build guide, or $1000 Gaming PC build guide.
With that said, lets take a look at the best 144Hz 4K monitors to buy right now.

LG 27GN950
LG 27GN950 Specs
- Resolution: 3840×2160
- Refresh Rate: 144Hz
- Panel Type: IPS
- Backlight: White LED
- Size 27″
- Pixel Density: 163p/inch
- GTG Response Time: 1ms

- Contrast Ratio: 1000:1
- Brightness: 450cd/m2
- HDR Cert: HDR600

- DisplayPort Version: 1.4
Much like the ACER XV282K KV above, the LG 27GN950 ($499.00) also features 4K gaming at 144Hz Refresh Rate, although only via its DP 1.4 connection, as it only offers HDMI 2.0, which is limited to 4K60p gaming. While using DisplayPort via a PC’s graphic card isn’t an issue, you don’t have this connector option on either the PS5 or XBox Series X, so its best to buy the ACER XV282K KV if you are a console gamer instead.
The LG 27GN950 is also slightly smaller at 27″, but with a slightly higher Pixel Density of 163.
This gaming monitor is both G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync compatible to allow for variable refresh rates and reduce screen tearing.
It does have a lower sustained brightness of 450cd/m2, but claims to also offers a peak brightness of 600cd/m2, making it DisplayHDR 600 compliant, together with a matching 1000:1 Contrast Ratio and 10bit (8-bit + FRC) color depth.
The LG 27GN950 ($499.00) falls slightly short of the ACER XV282K KV in terms of some specs, as well as not being able to use it as a console gaming monitor.

- DisplayPort Version: 1.4
The LG 38WN95C-W ($1,290.99) is a very similar gaming monitor to the LG 27GN950, except for a few important differences.
The most notable difference is clearly its a much larger screen size, measuring at a diagonal length of 37.5″, in a wide aspect ratio (21:9) resolution of 3840×1600, compared to the 3840×2160 on the LG 27GN950. This gives the LG 38WN95C-W a notably lower Pixel Density of 111p/inch.
This is however where the differences end, as they both offer HMDI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 connections, as well as both being Nvidia G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync compatible.
Both monitors offer the same sustained brightness of 450cd/m2 and DisplayHDR 600 compliant, together with a 1000:1 Contrast Ratio and 10bit (8-bit + FRC) color depth.
The LG 38WN95C-W ($1,290.99) is a great buy over the LG 27GN950 ($499.00) thanks to its much larger, wide resolution screen and ultra fast 144Hz Refresh Rates, making is a great gaming and productivity monitor. The only downside is that it is more expensive.

The ACER Nitro XV273K ($467.02) is a very similar looking gaming monitor to the LG 27GN950, both offering 4K 144Hz Refresh Rates and 163p/inch Pixel Density, although with a slower with a 4ms Response Time.
The ACER Nitro XV273K is also both G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync compatible, with its HMDI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 connections, and therefore also not being next gen console friendly.
While it does also feature a 1000:1 Contrast Ratio and 10-bit (8-bit + FRC) color depth, it does fall short with a 350cd/m2 brightness (HDR400 compliant), instead of the 450cd/m2 brightness (HDR600 compliant) seen on the LG 27GN950.
This is however where the differences end, as they both offer 100% sRGB and 90% DCI P3 Color Gamuts, as well as both being Nvidia G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync compatible.
Beside the slightly lower brightness levels and lower 4ms Response Time, you can’t go wrong with ACER Nitro XV273K ($467.02), especially with it being $100 cheaper than the LG 27GN950.

The ACER Predator XB273K ($1,100.00) offers great specs, but the deciding factor is if full G-SYNC capabilities are worth the extra costs.

- HDR Cert: HDR1000
- HDMI Version: 2.0
- DisplayPort Version: 1.4
The Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ ($2,700.98) is by far the most expensive 4K 144Hz gaming monitor on this list, due to its 384 Zone FALD (Full Array Local Dimming) technology within its 27″ display.
This 384 zone LED blacklighting creates a much higher brightness and accurate contrast, compared to the standard White LED edge lighting technology we see in the majority of today’s monitors.
Thus also assists in pushing this monitor’s brightness to 600cd/m2, giving it an HDR1000 certification. It is also fully G-SYNC enabled, with a dedicated CPU chip to eliminate screen tearing.
Beside the alternative backlighting technology, brightness and full G-SYNC certification, the Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ offers much the same that all most of the other monitors here do, including a 10bit (8-bit + FRC) color depth with 100% sRGB and 90% DCI P3.
It also features a standard 1000:1 Contrast Ratio and also HMDI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 connections on both monitors, making this a PC gaming monitor only.
The Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ ($2,700.98) was and still is far ahead of competitors even though it was released back in 2018, thanks to its FALD lighting and G-SYNC, although this does come with a hefty price tag.
Thanks to to next gen console and the Ampere RTX 3080 graphic cards, we will be seeing a lot more monitors of this calibre coming out in the next two year, albeit without the FALD technology as this is still very rare and expensive.
