If you have an Nvidia Geforce RTX graphics card, then you will want to check out at least one Raytracing games, to see what all the fuss is about.
Thanks to Jenson Huang and his team at Nvidia, they finally cracked to code to what has always been the holy grail of the graphical and 3D rendering industry – Real-time Raytracing.
This mythic unicorn, was said to never be achievable, even as recent as a decade ago, which I can attest to as an ex-3d artist, who spent years of my life just sitting and waiting for computers to render images, sometimes taking hours to render out even a single raytraced frame.
10 years later, things have vastly changed thanks to the breakthrough of these RTX graphic cards, that are now so advanced, that they are able to push out over 60 frames per SECOND of pure 4K Raytracing goodness. It really is far more of a remarkable achievement that vast majority of gamers realize.
In fact, I consider it one of the century’s biggest breakthroughs in gaming.
AMD are following close by, as their latest graphics cards support Raytracing as well, together with the next generation PS5 and XBox Series X. Raytracing will no longer be seen as the all-consuming frame eating black sheep of gaming, but rather a requirement in future games.
Check out my Nvidia Ampere comparison benchmarks to see how the new RTX 3000 Graphics cards perform.
Nvidia has truly laid the foundation that will be at the core of all new generation games, applications, virtual reality and even holographics in the future. in a short 5 years from now, it is going to be extremely difficult to remember how we ever gamed without it.
With all that said, here is a list of the best RTX Raytracing games available.

Difference Between RTX and Raytracing
Before we start, I just want to quickly clear up the difference between RTX and Raytracing, as they are not entirely the same thing, confusing many people. RTX the main umbrella of Nvidia new rendering technology, released with their Turing Graphics cards in 2018.
Within this RTX Ecosystem, are the smaller sub technologies, including:
- Rasterization
- Raytracing
- Compute
- AI & Deep Learning (DLSS)
These 4 technologies are calculated (rendered) on a hardware level using on of the 3 dedicated hardware core sets which include:
- Tensor Cores (AI & Deep Learning)
- RT Cores (Raytracing)
- Streaming Multiprocessor Cores (Physics, Rasterization, Shaders & everything else)
Also within the RTX Ecosystem are the software API’s that work together with the hardware, which include:
- OptiX, DirectX R (DX12 Ultimate), Vulkan
- NGX (AI-Accelerated Features)
- Advanced Shaders (Rasterization)
- CUDA 10, PhysX, Flex (Simulation)
- USD, MDL (Asset Interchange Formats)
All of these Hardware, Software and Rendering technologies come together to make up the RTX Ecosystem or Platform, with is ever expanding, as Nvidia are set to release NVCache (using your SSD to speed up load times, similar to PS5) with the Ampere launch as well.
So, just because a game is labeled as RTX, does not mean it has Raytracing, as many developers only make use of specific parts of the RTX Ecosystem, such as only having DLSS in games. You don’t need to have RayTracing in a game, in order to make use of DLSS, as they are two separate technologies.
Check out my Full List of the Best DLSS Support games available here.
I hope that helped clear things up for those of you who were still confused. With that all said, let’s take a look at the Best RayTracing games available.
Best RTX Raytracing Games 2020
2020 is the 3rd official year of Real-time Raytracing existing in games, seeing a substantial increase in the amount of game developers implementing it into their games.
Thanks to the next generation PlayStation 5 and XBox Series X console releasing in 2020, with Raytracing ready hardware, Raytracing in games is going to exponentially skyrocket, as developers are now not limited by hardware anymore.
Forza Motorsport
Release Date: TBC 2020/2021 | Developer: Turn10 Studios
The next Forza motorsport is set to feature some of the most amazing graphics seen in a racing game thus far.
Turn10 developers have stated that it will feature Raytracing at 4K60p, making it the first racing game to use Raytracing, releasing with Microsoft’s XBox Game Pass on PC and XBox Series X consoles
Whether it will be a sim racer or a more arcade style game remains to be seen, either way it looks fantastic.

Sword and Fairy 7
Release Date : TBC 2020 | Developer : SoftStar Entertainment
Sword and Fairy 7, is the follow up anime, JRPG game to the current ‘Chinese Paladin:Sword and Fairy 6’, from 2015.
Unfortunately there hasn’t been much news on this new title.
While the reviews of Chinese Paladin:Sword and Fairy 6 are mixed due to it being a port, that wasn’t done too well, I’m sure the original game is very good, specifically story wise.
Sword and Fairy 7 is definitely one to look out for, specifically thanks to its upcoming RTX raytracing features that look really good in the demo below.
- Old version of G502 with optical gaming sensor (PMW3366)
- Cable Length 6 feet or 1.83 meters

Atomic Heart
Release Date : TBC 2020 | Developer : Mundfish
Atomic Heart is a first-person shooter adventure game with events that unfold in an alternate universe during the middle of the Soviet Union. The main character of the game is a special agent P-3, who is trying to figure out what went wrong. after an unsuccessful landing on enterprise “3826”.
We don’t know too much else about this game as there has been very little info floating around, much it looks amazing and reminds me of BioShock, which I’m certainly not complaining about, as I can definitely do with more BioShock in my life.
The way Mundfish are incorporating RTX raytracing into Atomic Heart is breathtaking, and really shows how it can be used for far more creative and gameplay purposes, other than just making wet roads reflect.

SYNCED : Off Planet
Release Date: TBC 2020 | Developer: Tencent
SYNCED : Off Planet is an upcoming Day’s Gone/DayZ style MMO, also makes sue of RTX Raytracing reflections and shadows, in an urban/rural, near-future environments with plenty of puddles and metals to show off raytracing, combined with it’s Division 2 style gameplay, plus basic base building and obviously zombies.
While I am a fan of ray tracing it need sot be done properly and I feel that this game still needs a lot of tweaking in that department, as many of the reflections are still too mirror like and look fake, especially the first image with the outdoor flying ship.
Although, this game is naturally still in development, so I’m sure this will look far better at its launch in 2020.
Will be keeping a close eye on this title as it evolves.

Cyberpunk 2077
Release Date: 17 November 2020 | Developer: CD PROJEKT RED
Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification.
You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality. You can customize your character’s cyberware, skillset and playstyle, and explore a vast city where the choices you make shape the story and the world around you.
Much like Watch Dogs : Legion, this game is massive, with thousands of intricate and reflective details, from shop windows, vehicles, buildings and especially the metal on the character’s cyborg transformations.
Matt Wuebbling, head of GeForce marketing at NVIDIA said: “Cyberpunk 2077 is an incredibly ambitious game, mixing first person perspective and deep role-playing, while also creating an intricate and immersive world in which to tell this story. We believe the world of Cyberpunk will greatly benefit from the realistic lighting that ray tracing delivers,”
A must for RTX Raytracing, in all it’s glory.

Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War
Release Date: 13 November 2020 | Developer: Treyarch
Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War is the next Call of Duty game following the extremely popular COD Modern Warfare game released by Infinity Ward in 2019.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare took the series’ graphic level to new heights, showcasing some of the best graphics and 3D models seen in a game, coupled the RTX Raytraced lighting, absolutely blew my mind.
While MW was a great campaign and multiplayer game on its own, its wasn’t until Activision and Infinity Ward released Warzone, a free to play Battle Royal extension to COD MW, that its popularity truly skyrocketed.
While Warzone doesn’t support RTX Raytracing, COD MW still does and so will the new Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War, together with DLSS, offering a substantial increase in performance.
Hopefully with the new RTX 3000 Ampere graphics cards and the next-gen PS5 & XBox Series X consoles, Warzone will get both Raytracing and DLSS as well, especially seeing as Fortnite is getting it. We will have to wait and see.

Watch Dogs Legion
Release Date: 29 October 2020 | Developer: Ubisoft
Watch Dogs: Legion, the 3rd game in the Watch Dogs series, which was unveiled at E3 2019.
Coming in 2020, Watch Dogs: Legion will bring a brand new and innovative ‘play as anyone’ gameplay mechanic to the game. This lets you recruit literally anyone from the game world, including lawyers, medics, guards and even a granny hacker, to take back its near-future London setting.
Watch Dogs: Legion is certainly one of the most anticipated games of 2020, next to Cyberpunk 2077.
But Ubisoft didn’t stop there, as they partnered with Nvidia to bring RTX raytracing to Watch Dogs: Legion as well.
The near-future London features plenty of rain as well as a multitude of dynamic LED advertisement boards, glass-covered skyscrapers, shops and homes. This makes it the perfect setting for enhanced ray-traced reflections.
At night, areas form London such as Camden and Trafalgar Square, will truly come alive (especially in the rain), as the raytracing bring endless multicolored and transparent reflections across reflective surfaces, re-creating what we’d see in the real world.

But, if you have a nice powerful gaming setup, and want the best looking graphics WoW has to offer, then Raytraced shadows will bring a new level of graphics pleasure your way.
I for one am very excited about this one.

Crysis Remastered
Release Date : 18 September 2020 | Developer : Crytec
“But can it run Crysis” is probably one the most well known sayings among the gaming and PC benchmarking community, due to the original first-person shooter PC game, Crysis made in 2007’s.
Crysis ruled with an iron first, as it made a name for itself by not only being a great game, but more for its rein of terror that brought even the most hardcore PCs of the time, to their knees with its high end graphics settings.
Now, 13 years later, Crytec (who own and create the CRYENGINE that Crysis was developed on) want to take this crown back as they remaster the original Crysis with Raytracing added into the mix.
Crysis Remastered was supposed to be released much earlier, but due to poor response from the online community in regard to the lazy and dated visuals Crytec released, they have gone back to the drawing board to do a better job, and rightfully so, as it looked very bad.
A few months later and the game looks great with some nice Raytracing visuals that don’t require Nvidia RTX graphic cards to run, as its all software based.
This does however mean that it take a much higher performance hit compared to RTX optimized games, as they make specific use of the dedicated Raytracing cores, as well as those Tensor cores that DLSS makes use of, resulting in much better frames rates.
So while Crysis Remastered does have Raytracing for the masses, it also doesn’t, because the new RTX 3080 struggles to even deliver 4K60p, which is really practical compared to Nvidia’s RTX solution.

Minecraft
Release Date : TBC (Currently in BETA) | Developer : Mojang
Minecraft is the world’s best-selling game, in which you are able to craft a world out of blocks, and explore it with friends across multiple devices. Minecraft has been played by tens of millions of people, of all ages and backgrounds, and it has even been used in classrooms worldwide.
But things just got a whole lot better with Nvidia’s RTX Raytracing, now in the game, everything is vastly improved.
Lighting is upgraded to real-time global illumination, enabling light to realistically illuminate blocks and buildings as the world is modified. Per pixel lighting, allows emissive blocks like Glowstones and Lava, to illuminate environments, along with other dynamic game elements.
Water, glass and other reflective surfaces show accurate real-time reflections, mirroring their surroundings, all in real time.
Shading and shadows, gain lifelike accuracy, together with clouds, fog and other atmospheric effects, that naturally change the look and feel of the entire world.
With all this combined, the Minecraft blocks gain superior depth and detail from normal maps, enabling shadows, specular reflectivity, lighting and ambient occlusion to further increase their fidelity and appearance.

Best RTX Raytracing Games 2019
Bellow are all the games that were released in 2019 with RTX Raytracing enabled.
The Nvidia Geforce 20 series, RTX graphics cards were first announced at Gamescom in August 2018, followed by their consumer release in September 2018.
As this is such a big step forward in visual rendering, the technology had no games that supported it, as it required developers to first take advantage of it, before it could really start to spread its wings.
In the first half of 2019, very few games were released with ray tracing, which is as expected, as new games would need at least 6 months to adapt the technology into their games.
However at Gamescom 2019, a full year after the initial announcement, RTX really started to gain some momentum, with the announcement of 8 new games coming with ray tracing enabled, as we headed into the end of 2019 and early 2020.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Release Date : 25 October 2019 | Developer : Infinity Ward
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare serves as the 16th overall installment in the Call of Duty series, as well as a reboot of the original Modern Warfare games.
What sets it apart is by far the absolutely stunning graphical level it has achieved, compared to its predecessors. While playing this game, I constantly had to remind myself that the characters aren’t real actors but in fact 3D models running in real time in a game engine.
They are so, so good!
RTX Raytracing is also including this Call of Duty Modern Warfare, but not in terms of real time reflections. Instead, the developers chose to use raytracing Shadows to their advantage, and a great choice in my opinion, as the game play takes you to all sorts of night time war zones and interiors, where shadows create a fantastic mood and realism.
While Raytracing reflections aren’t required to enjoy the beauty of this game, they certainly take it to another level of realism, when turned on.
The game’s single player campaign is full of action and cinematic storytelling as the engrossing missions make you feel as though you are right there fighting in person.
Modern Warfare’s fun doesn’t stop there however, as there are plenty of Co-Op mission to play though as well as naturally the whole multiplayer aspect that COD is known for. All of which can be enjoyed in amazing realism thanks to great work from very talented developers as well as some help from Raytracing Shadows.

Control
Release Date : 27 August 2019 | Developer : Remedy Entertainment
Control is a supernatural 3rd person action-adventure, where, after a secretive agency in New York is invaded by an alien threat, you, Jesse Fadens, become the new Director struggling to regain Control.
This supernatural 3rd person action-adventure will require you to master the combination of supernatural abilities, modifiable loadouts, and interactive environments, all while fighting through a deep and unpredictable world, with allies, secrets and side-quests everywhere.
Control will require you to harness the diverse and dynamic environments and shifting architecture, for exciting combat possibilities and master complex rituals to alter your surroundings.
While Control is a good game in terms of its story and gameplay mechanics, this is by far the worst Raytracing and DLSS game on this list.
Control has already been released for an entire year, together with an expansion, yet Remedy have failed to address a major graphical texture bug in the game. I am incredibly confused as to how not a single person in their development team has never noticed or bothered to fix this glaring issue.
The problem comes in when using DX12 (required for Raytracing) and DLSS.
Textures are not up-scaled to high resolution (which is the entire point of DLSS), but are instead, actually reduced to such a very low resolution, that they look like they are from a game in the 90’s.
I couldn’t not play the game without it bothering the hell out of me, which is very sad to say the least.
I can’t understand how this continues to slip through the cracks, when it’s so blatantly obvious and destroys any hopes of playing this game with Raytracing.
The most ironic part of this, is the fact that Control was supposed to be the poster child of the realtime Raytracing experience in games, yet they have failed so miserably in delivering, while still not bothering to fix it.
While I can completely forgive initial teething of new technologies at launch, more than a year later, this is simply unacceptable.
I wouldn’t recommend Control as a Raytracing and DLSS game to my worst enemy at this point.

Wolfenstein Youngblood
Release Date : 25 July 2019 | Developer : Machine Games
While met with some skepticism (not sure why as I really enjoyed the game), Wolfenstein Youngblood’s developers really showed off in their creation of this game’s texturing, lighting and 3D modeling. The sheer quality of this can bee seen endlessly in all of its environments and characters.
A true standard of high end AAA quality.
The staggering amount of details in the vehicle, mechs, interior and exterior environments, as well as the guns on screen, it superb.
In January 2020, they added RTX Raytracing Reflections to Wolfenstein Youngblood and it looks absolutely amazing!

Amid Evil
Release Date : 20 June 2019 | Developer : Indefatigable
I quite honestly didn’t expect to like Amid Evil as much as I did.
While I played the hell out of games like Quake and Unreal Tournament back in my teens, (due to how amazing the graphics were at the time), I am still more inclined to be wowed by the latest games with the most realistic graphics, which are currently titles such as Assassin’s Creed, Red Dead Redemption 2 and so forth.
Other than games specifically designed to be pixel art, I am not usually pulled towards the old school 90’s 3D pixel graphics, but, Amid Evil made me a believer once more.
This is a face paced, retro action FPS which can be summed up as if Quake, Heretic and Doom had a baby in the Unreal 4 Engine, and damn are the results good!
The UE4 engine really delivers amazing performance results in Amid Evil.
I cranked up all the graphic and Raytracing settings to full blast while playing it at 4K resolution, easily able to achieve an average of around 78fps and that is without DLSS, which is apparently coming to the title in the future as well!
Note that the entire game isn’t Raytracing enabled just yet, only this specific level (Lost Falls), which was previously built to be a RTX demo. The devs have now included it into the main game as a separate level. Naturally full Raytracing support will be coming soon for the rest of the game.

Quake II RTX
Release Date : 6 June 2019 | Developer : Lightspeed Studios
A true classic, Quake II now comes with RTX Raytracing enabled, and even better, its totally free!
Global lighting effects, including realistic reflections, refraction, shadows, ambient occlusion and global illumination are a result of the path-traced simulation of light. Unfortunately all these added elements have been poorly implemented and optimized, as Quake II RTX runs very slowly at around 15-20fps at 4K. There were some areas that I managed to get 40fps, but enter another area again, dropped it back down to 20fps. Bethesda should really implement DLSS into this game as that will greatly help it.
In the end this is more a of “lets throw everything at this and see what happens” demo, and clearly not something Bethesda spent a lot of time on, but that doesn’t mean you cant make it a bit more optimized.

Stay in the Light
Release Date : 3 June 2019 | Developer : Sunside Games
Stay in the Light, is a small indie game, currently in early access, that markets itself as a horror adventure, but isn’t much in terms of game play. Although it does showcase some great RTX and Raytracing.
It seems that the game has been pulled from the Steam store, most likely not to return, but will keep it on the list in case it does make a come back in the future.

Assetto Corsa Competizione
Release Date : 29 May 2019 | Developer : Kunos Simulazioni
Assetto Corsa Competizione, released in May 2019, is the follow up to the original Assetto Corsa racing simulation game, that dates back all the way to its 2014 release date.
Assetto Corsa Competizione was initally announced and showcased to support RTX Raytracing, but has since removed it for the time being.
The reason for this by the developers, is that they want to keep frame rates as high as possible, due to the competitive e-sports field, where of Assetto Corsa Competizione finds itself. In this field frame rates outweighs beautiful graphics, similar to other competitive games such as CS:GO.
One the next gen graphics card are able to output higher frame rates, I’m sure we will once again see RTX in Assetto Corsa Competizion again.
Check out the showcase of the RTX raytracing graphics in the game below. They certainly do look stunning, so cannot wait for them to one day come back to this game.

Metro Exodus
Release Date : 15 February 2019 | Developer : 4A Games
Metro Exodus was released early in 2019 with much controversy thanks to its choice to abandon Steam users and rather opt in for an exclusive with the Epic Store.
Regardless of this, Metro Exodus was one of the first handful of games, to bring RTX Raytracing to the masses, even though it took a few shortcuts to do so, in order to keep frame rates at a playable number.
6 months later, 4A Games released their Two Colonels DLC for Metro Exodus, which not only adds more game play, but also extends the ray tracing quality in the game, with ray-traced global illumination with emissive lighting.
Its good to see that even titles released with RTX, still have a lot of improvement to deliver, as both the hardware and drivers become more optimized, and as the developers themselves learn more and become better with raytracing implementation.
Everyone working together for more beautiful games.

Best RTX Raytracing Games 2018
2018 was the birth of Real-time Raytracing, thanks to Nvidia and the very first game title to fully support it, Battlefield V – Henceforth known as the “OG of Raytracing Games“.
Thanks to DICE for being the first guys to take on this challenge , painstakingly working out many, many issues and bugs that come with any implementation of a new technology, in order to pave the way for the future of Raytracing games.
Salute!
Battlefield V
Release Date : 9 November 2018 | Developer : DICE
Battlefield V received mixed option about it multiplayer, but in terms of its graphical beauty and Raytracing capabilities, its still one of my favorites, especially when enjoyed int eh single player campaign.
There were a lot of kinks to iron out since the RTX launch (and still are many), but DICE have done most of the heavy lifting here, by sorting out all the initial issues that come with new tech, such as frame rates drop, DLSS implementation and more.
This has however helped open the doors for other developers and Nvidia to have a smoother path into getting RTX and Raytracing into future games, such as those coming in 2020, so thanks DICE for that.
Very sure that DICE will continue to push the boundaries of RTX and ray tracing in both BFV and their future games as well, so keeping a close, and very excited eye on that.
