Welcome to the Ryzen 7 5800x vs 3800x benchmark comparison. In this review, we will take a deep look at how these two CPUs compare to one another, as well as how these hardware specs deliver in gaming and productivity performances.
2020 has certainly been one amazing year for technology and gaming hardware releases. Nvidia kicked things off with their 3000 series Ampere graphics cards.
While the lack of stock and unavailability is unfortunate, it allowed AMD to swoop in with their Big Navi Radeon 6000 Graphics cards, that are certainly making Team Green very worried.
AMD were also busy making custom hardware for both the Sony PlayStation 5 ($400.00) and Microsoft XBox Series X ($449.00).
AMD didn’t stop there however, dethroning yet another titan in the microprocessor hardware industry, Team Blue – Intel, with their launch of the all new Ryzen Zen3 5000 CPU’s, which now beats the socks off Intel, at the one thing they still held dear – single threaded gaming performance.
With that said, let’s see how the Ryzen 5800X compares to the Ryzen 3800X.

Ryzen 7 5800x vs 3800x : 1080p Benchmarks
As we are all about gaming here, we will take a look at the 1080p gaming benchmarks first.
We use 1080p as our benchmark resolution when testing CPU performance, as this lower resolution makes less use of the graphics card, compared to high resolutions such as 1440p and 4K, which are more GPU dependent, thus altering the results in favor of GPU performance and not CPU performance.
Naturally we can benchmark at a lower resolution such as 720p, as this is even less GPU and more CPU bound than 1080p, offering more accurate CPU performance results.
However, no one plays games at 720p resolution anymore, so its becomes a pointless test in terms of real world usage. Many gamers do however still play at 1080p (even pro e-sport players), so the below results will give you an indication of what performance gains you can see in the real world.
With that said, let’s take a look at the 1080p gaming benchmarks of the Ryzen 7 5800x vs 3800x.

Ryzen 7 5800x vs 3800x : Productivity Benchmarks
Next up are the productivity benchmarks. These cover a wide array of PC orientated actives. Everything from general day to day use of your PC, to more specific CPU bound tasks such as game & software development, file decompression, rendering, editing and even AI machine learning Tensorflow.
These benchmarks results give a much better indication of the difference in CPU performance than what 1080p gaming benchmarks can, as they are totally CPU bound tasks, where as gaming still relies on the GPU in some or other form, even at 1080p, where we try to restrict the GPU as much as possible .Different games as use the CPU in varying amounts depending on how their engine was coded.
With that said, let’s take a look at the Ryzen 7 5800x vs 3800x productivity benchmarks.

Ryzen 7 5800x vs 3800x - Conclusion
Well guys, that’s it from me and this Ryzen 7 5800x vs 3800x Benchmark comparison.
While the Ryzen 5800X is still on the same 7nm semiconductor technology as the Ryzen 3800X, AMD have make some very clever adjustments to the layout of the CCX CPU Cores and L3 cache (codenamed “Infinity Fabric”), as explained in the video in the beginning of this article and the image below.
By not splitting the L3 cache into two parts of 16MB and rather allowing all cores to have access to the full 32MB cache at the same time, has given the new Zen3 CPUs lower latency, faster bandwidth and thus a solid performance increase.
Just clever design and again showing how innovative AMD engineers have become. This isn’t the only improvement they made with Zen3 however, but it is the most significant.
In terms of real world benchmark performance, the new Ryzen 5800X beats the now older Ryzen 3800X by an average of 14% in Gaming Performance and 15% in Productivity Performance.
Again, as explained under the benchmark results, gaming performance increases are only notable at lower resolutions such as 1080p. As you increase resolution to something like 4K, then you GPU becomes more important.
So if you are looking at building a new 4K gaming rig, invest in a GPU first, then a CPU.
On the flip side, if you are a 1080p gamer than want the very best frame rates, then both CPU and GPU are of equal importance.
If you are looking to increase your everyday desktop usage performance in your Web Browser or Microsoft Office Suit, or fall into one of the more specific job roles such as photo/video editing, 3D rendering, databases, deep learning, simulations, game and software development, then your CPU is number one on the priority list.
For this, the new Zen3 definitively give a worthwhile performance gain over Zen2.
Since the inception of the Ryzen Zen architecture back in March 2017, the AMD engineers have not only kept their promise of keeping the next two generation of CPU on the same AM4 Socket (unlike Intel who make a new one for every single CPU release to make you buy a new motherboard), they have also taken the architecture to new performance levels with each release.
It is safe to say that they have now pushed everything out of the 7nm Zen architecture that they possibly can, as the next generation of CPUs will be focused around 5nm.
This is however more than year away, so if you are looking for the very best the 7nm and AMD Zen architecture has to offer, then the Ryzen Zen3 is the only way to go. Not to mention that there is nothing from Intel that even remotely comes close as they are still lagging behind on ancient 14nm technology.
You simply cannot beat the Zen3 price vs performance right now.
Alternatively the price of Zen2 might drop as Amazon tries to get rid of old stock, so you could grab a good deal there as well. Check out the full price list below to see which is the better price between the two generations.
Remember that the MSRP of the Ryzen 3800X is $399 and the Ryzen 5800X is $449. So don’t buy the Zen2 CPU if it costs more than its MSRP, as price could also increase as stock becomes less. If its anything over its MSRP, then the Zen3 CPU is by far the better buy.
One last thing to mention is that only the new Zen3 processor with work with the new AMD Big Navi RX 6000 graphics card if you wan to take advantage of what AMD are calling “Smart Memory Access” technology. In a nut shell, the AMD 5000 CPU and RX 6000 GPU share their memory and optimize the data transfer between the Ryzen/Radeon combo, for a extra 5-10% boost in performance if you have an All-AMD PC build. Smart Memory Access will also require either a AMD X570 motherboard or AMD B550 motherboard, as X470 cannot make use of it.
So if you are torn between Zen2 and Zen3 right now, but want to buy the new Radeon Big Navi RX 6000 graphics cards, then definitely go for Zen3.
In conclusion, my hat truly goes off the Lisa Su, who has managed to not only scrap AMD off the ground within as little as 3 years, but is now downright beating both Intel and Nvidia at their own game simultaneously. An astonishing achievement to say the least.
