If you haven’t opened any packs yet, you will not have seen a Wildcards yet. If you have, you might be wondering How MTG Arena Wildcards work. They are very easy to understand and a very powerful item, to help filling your deck with those few missing, but important cards that you need.
How to get MTG Arena Wildcards?
Before we start, please check out this article for more information on how MTG Arena leveling works.
This will give you a very detailed breakdown of how to level up and what rewards you get on the way to level 20/25. Once you reach level 20, you will start to obtain MTG Arena Wildcards from the next 5 levels of your MTG Arena Mastery Tree.
When you’ve reached level 25 in your Mastery Tree, you will have the Wildcards, in your possession:
- At Level 21 you get 8x Common Wildcards
- At Level 22 you get 4x Uncommon Wildcards
- At Level 23 you get 2x Rare Wildcards
- At Level 24 you get 1x Mythic Wildcards
- At Level 25 you get 5 more pre-made multi-color decks
You can see how many MTG Arena Wildcards you have at any time, simply by hovering over the lotus icon in the top right of the screen. You can choose to keep these 15x Wildcards for later (which is what I advise) or use them straight away if you’d like as well.

How to use MTG Arena Wildcards?
When the time comes that you want to use your newly acquired MTG Arena Wildcards, it’s very simple to do so.
- First click on the ‘DECKS’ tab,
- Create a new deck, or open an existing deck.
- When in the deck building screen, select the ‘CRAFT’ button, in the top right hand corner (it will go Gold when its active).
- Once done, click the card that you want to craft.
You can select to craft 1,2,3 or 4 copies of a card, depending on how many you need, and how many Wildcards you have available in the rarity level, as well as how many of the current copies of that specific card you already own.
You cannot go over 4 copies of any card in Magic the Gathering, as this is the max amount of copies per card, that you can have in any deck, and thus in your library as well.
Should you have 4 copies of a specific card and then pick up another one (5th copy) in a Booster Pack, it will go towards your Vault.

Naturally, you require the associated Wildcard Rarity, to match the Rarity Level of the card you are wanting to Craft into a permanent card.
In other words you can only us an Uncommon Wildcard, to craft an Uncommon Permanent Card of your choice. You cannot use it to craft a Common, Rare or Mythic, as the Rarity Level doesn’t match.
You also cannot combine Wildcards to make them stronger, so you cannot combine two Common Wildcards, to make an Uncommon Wildcard.
This is similar to crafting with Dust in HearthStone, except I find MTG Arena, to be much more accessible, as you are able to get Mythic cards much faster with this system, than in HearthStone.

What can I craft with MTG Arena Wildcards?
As mentioned above, you can craft any card you’d like, as long as you have the same Rarity Level Wildcard in your inventory. Using this method, you will be able to unlock very powerful PlanesWalkers using your Mythic Wildcards, which will really boost the power of your deck exponentially.
You are given your first Mythic Wildcard at level 24 in your Mastery Tree, so you are able to already craft a Planeswalker by that time should you wish to do so.
How do I get MTG Arena Wildcards?
Besides the Wildcards that you receive in your journey from level 21 to 25 in the Mastery Tree, Wildcards are only found by random drops, when opening Booster Packs.
Wildcard Drops in Booster Packs
They are not an extra drop, to the 8x Cards that you receive when opening a Booster Pack, but will instead replace the given Rarity Card, that would otherwise be in the Booster Pack.
In other words, if you get a Common Wildcard in a booster pack, you will receive 4 other Random Common cards instead of 5, as one of the 5, will be a Common Wildcard instead.
You are able to receive any one of the four rarities in MTG (Common, Uncommon, Rare & Mythic), in the form of Wildcards.
Wildcards can also double drop in the form of getting both a Common and Uncommon in one pack. I have however, never had a double common wildcard drop from one booster pack, so I don’t think this is possible.
Getting a Wildcard is ALWAYS better than receiving a random card, as it gives you full control to craft whatever card you need right off the bat, which is fantastic. This goes a long way into completing a nice custom deck very quickly, instead of waiting on ‘lady chance’ to do it for you.
The other major benefit of Wildcards from Booster Packs, is that you can acquire cards from one MTG Arena set, from opening Booster Packs from another set.
In other words, if I were to open 5x Throne of Eldraine Booster Packs, and receive let’s say 3x wildcards from them. I can then use these Wildcards, to Craft card from any one of the other MTG Sets, such as Guilds of Ravnica, Ravnica Allegiance, War of the Spark and Magic Core 2020 (M20), as Wildcards are not restricted to the set you acquired them from, which is great!

Wildcard Generator
There is also one other mechanic available in MTG Arena, that allows us to acquiring Wildcards passively, and that is the “Wildcard Pie Charts”, that tick over, when opening packs.
You will see the “Wildcard Pie Charts” in the top right of your screen when opening Booster Packs.
This “Wildcard Pie Chart” system, basically guarantees that you get a certain amount of Wildcards per amount of Booster Packs opened, if luck is not on your side, and you don’t get Wildcard drops in the Booster Packs themselves.
Each time that you open a Booster Pack, you will fill ⅙ of each of the two “Wildcard Pie Charts”
Once fill all 6 sections of a pie chart, you get a PIE! LOL jokes!
You get something even better, a Free, Uncommon Wildcard, as the pie chart resets.
So basically for every 6 Booster Packs that you open, you receive a guaranteed bonus Uncommon Wildcard.
But wait, there’s more!
There is a second 6 piece “Wildcard Pie Chart”, right next to the Uncommon one. This one works in a similar way, but handles Rares and Mythics, swapping between them in a rotational basis.
So, for your first 6 Booster Packs that you open, you will receive 1 Uncommon Wildcard, but also 1 Rare Card, as both cards tick over.
Both the Uncommon and Rare chart resets, until you open another 6 Booster packs.
After opening 24 Booster Packs, you will receive your last Rare Wildcard, and the Rare Pie Chart will swap over, to the a Mythic Chart.
After you have opened 6 More Booster Packs, this Mythic Pie Chart will fill up and you will receive a Mythic Wildcard, followed by the chart swapping back to Rare again.
Awesome! Nicol Bolas, Gurrak, Vraska, Gideon and Chandra, here we come!
Once you receive this Mythic Wildcard, the pie chart will flip over back to Rare status, and the process will rinse and repeat itself.
So in summary, for every 6 booster Packs that you open, you receive a guaranteed Wildcard and for every 30 Booster Packs opened it will be a Mythic Wildcard.
That works out to an average of 1x Wildcard, per 3x Booster Packs opened.
Not too shabby I’d say.

MTG Arena Wildcard fill in the gaps
These Wildcards, really went a long way into taking my deck from good to great, in a very short time, after only spending $50 for 45 Booster Packs, as well as playing the game for about 3 few days.
You will even get a lot of Wildcards, from free Booster Packs, that you can buy using Gold, or from your Eldraine Mastery Path, which you get from doing the Daily and Weekly quests.
I am currently in Platinum Division thanks to ‘Double Tap” deck, which I could never have obtained without the use of Wildcards.
