Welcome to my Electro Ride Review, where we take a quick look at this neon arcade racing game
Electro Ride has a nice visual concept as I really liked the graphics, but the developers failed to take full advantage of this potential. This game unfortunately finds itself in the ocean of generic arcade racers, offering nothing special in terms of its gameplay other than the color switching mechanic that gives you a speed boost, once you match the section on the track with your current given color.
That is the gameplay in a nutshell, resulting in it feeling very hollow and empty, with nothing there to keep me coming back for more.
As first, Electro Ride has a GRIP Racing feel to it, (which also has speed boost on the track), but quickly loses that magic, as it only offers speed boost and nothing more, missing all the other cool weapons and boosts the GRIP offers.
The controls are however where the game really falls flat. They are very poorly made, so much so that it’s a challenge to even go in a straight line within having to overcorrect your car’s back wheels from swinging out and sending it tumbling down the track.
The one Steam review says it best: “The car handling feels like you’re trying to catch a bar of soap with your hands drenched in water”
If managing the straight is this difficult, then you can only imagine how bad the experience becomes around corners, where you have to ever so slightly tap your steering keys (if you are on a keyboard) to turn your car and avoid it from flipping over at a moment’s notice.
This completely defies the point of having speed boosts to begin with, as their objective is SPEED, yet you have to cautiously release or brake to go around corners right after you obtain one, as even the slightest touch of a barrier, sends your car spinning wildly into the air.
The speed boosts also don’t offer much excitement as they offer very next to the sense of “OMG this is fast!” as even with them activated you drive a moderate 120-150 km/h, speeds that any basic car on the road can do.
Any contact with other cars also has the same results.
The game tells you to handbrake turn into tight corners, yet when you do, it’s actually more detrimental than useful, as you will inevitably hit the barrier, followed by the above results once again. In fact, even the slightest touch of a barrier at any point in the game, sends you skywards.
The AI cars aren’t great either, and fail to follow any realism in their position. They either wait for you to catch up when you are in last position, or sit right behind you waiting to crash and pass you when you are first.
Unfortunately cool looking neon graphics and a can only carry a game so far, which for me, one race was enough for me to easily decide to play something else.
The controls need a lot of reworking and the gameplay needs more than just a single and rudimentary speed up mechanic. This is an arcade racer after all, no reason to get creative with more boosts, guns and armor, which particle and firing effects could look great in this graphic style. These are however pointless if you cannot control your car.
I think the game has potential to correct its issues, especially as it has been made by a single developer. However, this is not an indie project, as he does have some big publishers behind him, including Playway, so there is no excuse to provide a game with better controls and more substance than its current state.
For these reasons, I am unable to recommend Electro Ride, and put this on my list of the Best Arcade Racing Games.
Well guys, that’s it from me.
